Gqom Producer, DJ Boonu Has Passed On

Gqom producer and deejay, DJ Boonu, has passed away after a brief illness. The producer and businessman died in the early hours of Wednesday morning, March 25, 2026.

Born Andile Chili, DJ Boonu hailed from Durban and was one of the pioneers of the Gqom sound. He contributed to the genre with bangers like “Uswidi Wodwa” featuring Madanon, Igcokama Elisha, and Mashayabhuqe, as well as “Abangani Bam” with Madanon, Duncan, Duma Ntando, and Jaiva Zimnike.

While he later repositioned himself and focused more on the business side of music—launching Swidi Films, a production house dedicated to music videos and storytelling, and Ezase Afro, a YouTube channel that promotes Gqom in all its aspects, he never abandoned the genre. Instead, he continued to release occasional hits from time to time.
