Those who say Gqom has faded off the South African music charts are not being sincere with themselves. While it no longer covers the massive terrain in the country it once used to, it remains the go-to sound in many provinces, especially Cape Town, where if a club hasn’t played a Gqom offering, the party has not started.
Well, Gqom’s strong influence in some provinces is normal, as other genres also have places where they hold sway. Take, for example, Lekompo. While the sound has a national presence, it’s mainly dominant in Limpopo. And note, for these sounds, we have not yet talked about their international influence.
