Mjolisi have released their a project that will project his influences far outside the borders of the Maskandi sound with his delivery of “Kuphelele.”
There hasn’t been any work of art by Mjolisi that wasn’t a proper banger, but this one is a bit different from what he has delivered since he first made his burst into the music mainstream. He went outside the typical Maskandi range, reaching for new melodies and styles while sticking to the essence we have always associated with the genre.
Featuring 12 tracks, Mjolisi worked with a variety of versatile talents, including MaWhoo on the album’s lead song, “Kuphelele,” which also doubles as the album’s title. And the inclusion of these versatile talents makes for an album that solidifies its place as a landmark addition to Mjolisi’s impressive discography.
“Kuphelele” is out everywhere, and this one is a groundbreaking project that aims to present art beyond any boxy definitions of what Maskandi is. And it’s such a unique approach to music-making, coupled with the strong Zulu influence and traditional flair, that is why Maskandi music has continued to reign supreme.
