Imithente are back and better, and they made their announcement with “Inyoka,” a song that is taken from their “Umakoti Egoyile” EP.
In a male-dominated genre, it always gladdens our hearts to see women flourish. Before now, it was believed that Maskandi was solely an affair of men. While women have acted as background vocalists and performers, most of the faces of Maskandi were male, but that all changed when the late guitarist Simosakhe Mthalane pioneered an all-female Maskandi group, and these female queens took a genre long coded as male and made it their own.
After an initial long break from releasing music, the group, which is now made up of Nondumiso Ngubane, Lungile Manana, and Nokuthula Manana, has rebranded, and they make their mark with the release of the Umakoti Egoyile EP. One track from this project that you don’t want to sleep on is “Inyoka.”
“Inyoka” is melodious, and even if Imithente has returned with a new face and a very enjoyable modern Maskandi beat, the group still holds on to the original flavours and essence that have defined their existence for years.
