Calvin Fallo Shares Thoughts About Who Created Amapiano & The Origin of The Sound

There is a lot of debate and controversy about who really created Amapiano and the place the sound originated from. While it’s a fact that the sound is 100% South African, many newcomers who recently jump into the trends a couple of years ago have been feeding international audience with lots of wrong information.

In a recent interview with Uncle Waffles, she said Amapiano made its burst into the SA music mainstream in 2021, but that is a false statement because Amapiano had been a thing since the year 2015.

One question new listeners and audiences have been asking for years now is: who created the Amapiano sound? Is it Kabza De Small, Tumza D’kota or Mfr Souls? However, Calvin Fallo disagrees with these claims of Amapiano ownership. According to the veteran producer, those who claim they created the Amapiano sound should provide evidence. He asserts that adding new layers to the sound doesn’t automatically make you the creator of Amapiano.

“This who started Amapiano chat is funny 😹 everyone putting in extra few years of when they started just so they could claim they started it. I think it’s time we all produce evidence.”Calvin Fallo posted on his socials.

What We Think About The Origin of Amapiano
What we know today as Amapiano evolved through many sounds and sub-styles. We first heard Amapiano in 2013/14, then it was called Broken beats and Kota sound from pioneers such as MFR Souls, Nyico Loco, Calvin Fallo, Junior Taurus, Gaba Cannal, Snowdeep, Tumza D’Kota, Shuffle & Dihno Cafe. Kabza De Small, Jaivane & Mdu aka TRP’s involvement with this sound in 2015/16 gave it a big facelift and made Amapiano an established sound in the SA music scene through introduction of new elements. For example, Mdu aka TRP’s attachment of Log drum really gave the sound some added flavour.
