Skweletu’s long awaited “Ngibulawa Isilwane” album is finally here and this one shows the prospect of the Maskandi sound.
Gone are the days when many thought Maskandi should only be digested local Zulu people. Now, the genre is now piercing through the South African music mainstream and becoming one of its leading genre, this is all thanks to the consistent inputs from artists like Skweletu real name Omphile Chiliza.
Known for his hit singles, “Ikhaya lami” and “Ngiyazondlela,” Skweletu has changed the course of Maskandi music. Continuing to reposition the sound so it fits well with national and international standards, the versatile artists has delivered to us his seventh studio project via “Ngibulawa Isilwane.”
“Ngibulawa Isilwane” holds 12 tracks and all were written and composed by Skweletu. This one shows the diversity of his sound and the range of its melodies. The album includes no features except for “Inja Engajola Nayo” which featured Onezwa Mchunu. It is nearly a product of the man himself.
One of the main reason we so much cherish Maskandi music is the fact that these sounds are made for everyone and every class. It really isn’t a genre made for the music mainstream. It is music for the young, old, middle age, rich and poor. The music is all about unity on the dancefloor, creating stronger bonds between us and our ancestors and connecting us to our roots. And releases from Skweletu are making us see the real essence of this genre.
